We tell all we know about the accident, the situation now and how we’ll go ahead now.

Our report is based on information of the survivor, witch reached us in the last days.

The sailboat Taube started in Larache at Monday 10:00 pm. They decided in face of bad weather to leave, because in port they felt unwelcome, because of frequent, unfriendly controls by the authorities. Supposable, Mohammedia was port of destination.

By reason of sea sickness and exhaustion, they decided to go to Medhia. Following to the survivor, they didn’t know, about the especially dangerous breakers there.

Why the danger was expected so totally wrong is a mystery to us. The skipper was since Baltic Sea nearly every time on board, mostly as leader of ship. He had a basic boat license and he had participated in a course for SKS-license, the German yachtmaster coastal certificate.

The accident took place at Tuesday 18:00 local time, shortly before twilight. The Taube was entering port mole or very close to do this. They had just started manually the diesel engine, so minimum one person got out of life jacket to do so. The persons in cabin of cause also weren’t wearing life jackets.

Suddenly, the boat was pushed very hard by a big wave and one or two windows at prow broke. Through cabin entrance water came into boat. Up to that, the survivor was laying in bunk because of sea sickness. She left cabin as quick as possible. For very short time she stood outside until the next wave throw her into water. According to her notice in this moment, everybody could leave the cabin.

As she swam in water, she wasn’t able to see the ship anymore, only one other person on another wave. She griped a camping mat, witch she found drifting in water and swam to a point of coast witch fishermen showed her. She guess that she has been in the water for max. 20 minutes.

What than happened to Taube we don’t know. Surely, somebody was able to activate the Epirb (satellite emergency sender), because in it’s fixture at cabin wall a false alarm was avoided magnetically.

Other safety equipment on board: Per person a life jacket with lifebelt, VHF-radio, signal flares, dinghy and more.

The Taube itself was a yacht in steel with ballast keel and additional sword. The keel was filled with cement and plumb and hat a draft of 0.95 meter. The sword could be handed by a hoist and put draft up to 1.6 m. We think the boat had a capsize stability as usual as yachts have. The type of boat as Taube was has a tradition in tidal water like North Sea. (E. g. SY ‘Kathena’, witch was sailed around the world in the late sixties.)

But in our opinion, neither the boat nor the safety equipment decided in this situation. No sport ship has a serious chance to survive breaker waves like that.

At place of accident the current direction was offshore, so it was extremely hard to escape by swimming. This explains why only one person without life jacket could safe herself.

As well as we know the Taube wasn’t found yet. All that was found is one dead person, a life jacket and some pieces of wood.

That’s all we can say about Morocco. We, the friends who stayed at home, are still in dolour but also have to think about how to go on now.

As next we collect all information we have for the BSU (Federal Bureau of maritime Casualty Investigation).

Friday, 30th of January, there was a small commemoration in Leipzig. Also there are some plannings to do a bigger one in south of Germany in about a month.

Some words about us: We are handful persons who try as well as possible to handle what happened. There isn’t anybody professional working for Migrobirdo, and nobody of us organized the trips of Taube, this was done on the boat. We hope this explains our small knowledge and the long time it took to publish this report.

Bei dem Unfallbericht stützen wir uns auf den Bericht der Überlebenden, wobei wir viele Informationen auch erst seit ein paar Tagen haben.

Die Taube fuhr Montag Abend um ca. 22:00 Uhr in Larache los. Sie entschieden sich trotz schlechter Wetterbedingungen zum Auslaufen, da sie sich durch häufige, unfreundliche Kontrollen der Behörden im Hafen unwohl fühlten. Zielhafen sollte vermutlich Mohammedia sein.

Da einige mit Seekrankheit zu kämpfen hatten und der Rest der Crew erschöpft vom Segeln war, entschieden sie sich Mehdia anzulaufen. Nach Angaben der Überlebenden waren sie sich der besonders gefährlichen Brandung nicht bewusst.

Wieso die Gefahr falsch eingeschätzt wurde, ist uns ein Rätsel. Der Skipper war seit der Ostsee fast immer an Bord gewesen, meist als Schiffsführer. Er verfügte über einen Sportbootführerschein und hatte an einem Theoriekurs zum Sportküstenschifferschein teilgenommen.

Das Unglück geschah am Dienstag Abend um ca. 18:00 Uhr Ortszeit, also kurz vor der Abenddämmerung. Die Taube befand sich kurz vor den Hafenmolen oder vielleicht sogar zwischen diesen. Sie hatten gerade den Motor angekurbelt (weshalb mindestens einer seine Rettungsweste auszog). Die Personen unter Deck trugen ebenso keine Rettungswesten.

Plötzlich neigte sich das Boot stark nach vorne unten, ein oder zwei der vorderen Fenster wurden eingeschlagen, und durch den Niedergang kam ein Brecher ins Innere. Die Überlebende selbst war bis dahin seekrank in der Kajüte gelegen. Nun verließ sie so schnell es ging die Kajüte, stand noch kurz an Deck, und wurde dann vom nächsten Brecher über Bord gespült. Ihrer Wahrnehmung nach kamen alle raus. Als sie an Deck stand konnte sie noch kein Land sehen, was bei mehreren hundert Meter Breite der Flussmündung nicht heißt, dass sie noch weit draußen waren.

Als sie im Wasser schwamm sah sie nichts mehr vom Schiff, nur noch eine andere Person auf einem anderen Wellenberg. Sie hielt sich an einer Isomatte fest, die neben ihr trieb, und schwamm auf das Land zu, wo ihr Fischer dann eine sichere Stelle um an zu Land gehen zeigten. Sie schätzt, dass sie höchstens 20 Minuten im Wasser war.

Was mit der Taube weiter geschah, ist nur Spekulation. Es muss noch jemand die Zeit gehabt haben, die Epirb auszulösen, denn so lange sie in der Wandhalterung in der Kajüte steckte war sie magnetisch gegen Fehlalarm gesichert.

An Seenotausrüstung standen ansonsten zur Verfügung: Je Person eine Schwimmweste mit Sorgleine, UKW-Funkgerät, Signalfackeln, Fallschirmraketen, Beiboot und etliches mehr.

Bei der Taube handelte es sich um eine Kielschwert-Yacht aus Stahl. Das heißt sie hatte einen massiven, breiten Kiel aus Stahl, der mit Zement und vermutlich Blei gefüllt war, um Kentersicherheit zu erzielen. Mit diesem hatte sie einen Tiefgang von etwa 0,95 m. Ein Schwert aus Edelstahl konnte mit Hilfe einer Winde hinab gelassen werden, womit sie einen Tiefgang von ca. 1,60 m hatte. Wir gehen davon aus, dass sie über einen für Yachten üblichen Stabilitätsumfang, d. h. Kentersicherheit, verfügte. Dieser Bootstyp hat in Gezeitengewässern wie der Nordsee durchaus Tradition. (vgl. z. B. SY “Kathena”, mit der W. Erdmann in den 60-igern die Erde umsegelte.)

Nach unserer Meinung spielte in dieser Brandungszone jedoch weder die Notausrüstung noch die Art des Bootes (Größe, Stabilität etc.) eine Rolle: Kein Sportschiff hat eine ernsthafte Chance eine derartige Grundsee heil zu überstehen.

Da an der Unglücksstelle ablandige Strömung herrschte, muss es extrem schwierig gewesen sein, sich schwimmend zu retten. Dies erklärt, warum sich nur eine Person (ohne Schwimmweste!) retten konnte.

Nach unserem Wissen wurde die Taube noch nicht gefunden. Alles was man bisher fand ist eine Tote und eine Rettungsweste sowie mehrere Holzteile.

Soweit zu Marokko. Wir, die zu Hause Gebliebenen, haben uns mittlerweile soweit berappelt, dass wir darüber nachdenken, wie es jetzt weitergeht.

Zunächst steht die BSU-Untersuchung (BSU=Bundesstelle für Seeunfalluntersuchung) an, für die wir Informationen zusammentragen.

Auch über das Projekt an sich machen wir uns Gedanken. Dazu planen wir gerade eine Vereinsversammlung.

Am Freitag (30.01) fand in Leipzig eine kleine Gedenkveranstaltung statt, und es gibt Überlegungen in ca. einem Monat eine etwas größere in Süddeutschland zu machen.

Noch ein paar Worte, wer wir sind: Eine handvoll Menschen, die nun versuchen, so gut es eben geht, mit dem Geschehenen umzugehen. Es gibt keinen Hauptamtlichen und die meisten waren in den vergangenen Monaten eher wenig für den Verein aktiv. Von uns hat niemand die Törns der Taube organisiert, das geschah von Bord aus. Damit wollen wir unser geringes Wissen zu den Vorfällen entschuldigen und auch, dass dieser Bericht so lange auf sich warten ließ.
